“Good versus evil” is a kind of trope in older writing—especially Christian writing, where established moral boundaries are just about mandatory. The idea is that there are good guys and bad guys, and they ram against each other in an epic clash of wills. The good is holy and pure, the evil corrupt and complete in its depravity. Or so goes the trope.
